Personal Loan Borrowers Focus on Smarter EMI Management as Lending Rules and Credit Trends Evolve
Personal loan borrowers in India are increasingly paying closer attention to interest rates, repayment schedules and overall borrowing costs as retail credit continues to evolve. Recent developments in the lending market have also highlighted the importance of understanding how changes in interest rates and loan terms can affect monthly financial commitments.
In June 2026, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) maintained the repo rate at 5.25%, while several banks subsequently revised their MCLR rates. For example, HDFC Bank increased select MCLR rates by up to 10 basis points, while Canara Bank and Bank of Baroda also revised certain lending rates. Such changes can affect borrowers whose loans are linked to applicable floating-rate benchmarks, depending on their loan terms and reset schedules.
The RBI has also proposed changes intended to make lending-rate practices more transparent. The proposed framework includes more frequent disclosure of lending rates and quarterly resets for floating-rate loans, with the proposed changes expected to take effect from April 1, 2027, subject to the final framework.
These developments make regular loan reviews increasingly relevant for borrowers. Instead of focusing only on the monthly EMI, borrowers can review the outstanding principal, remaining tenure, applicable interest rate and total repayment cost. The RBI's existing framework for EMI-based personal loans also provides for certain options around interest-rate resets, including changes to EMI or tenure, switching to a fixed rate where applicable, and prepayment subject to the lender's terms.
At the same time, formal retail credit access has expanded significantly. A July 2026 report citing industry data said formal retail credit penetration exceeded 74% by March 2026, compared with 35% in March 2017. The report also noted increasing participation in smaller unsecured loans, indicating the growing role of formal credit in household financial activity.
For existing personal loan borrowers, these trends reinforce the importance of maintaining disciplined repayment habits. Building an emergency fund, keeping EMI amounts aside before discretionary spending and avoiding unnecessary additional debt can help maintain monthly cash-flow stability. Borrowers receiving bonuses or other additional income can also evaluate part-prepayment options after checking applicable lender conditions and charges.
Before refinancing or transferring a loan, borrowers should compare the complete financial impact rather than looking only at the advertised interest rate. Processing fees, prepayment or foreclosure charges, remaining tenure and the revised EMI should all be considered before making a change.
As India's retail lending environment continues to change, personal loan borrowers may benefit from regularly reviewing their repayment arrangements and aligning EMIs with their broader monthly financial plans. A structured approach can help borrowers manage existing obligations while continuing to maintain savings and adequate financial liquidity.
