Car Buyers Weigh Lower EMIs as India’s Auto Market Hits Record September

India’s passenger vehicle market has recorded a strong September, with retail sales reaching a record 4,27,213 units, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). Sales increased 32.10% year-on-year and 6.17% compared with August, highlighting strong consumer demand ahead of the festive season.

With vehicle purchases gaining momentum, financing decisions are also becoming increasingly important for buyers. A car loan with a lower monthly EMI can make a vehicle easier to fit into a household budget, but borrowers may pay more interest when they select a longer repayment period. On the other hand, a shorter tenure can increase the monthly EMI while potentially reducing the total interest payable.

Current lending rates also vary based on factors such as the borrower's credit profile and loan tenure. For example, SBI's published new-car loan rates currently range from 8.40% to 9.35%, with pricing varying according to credit score and repayment period.

The strong festive-season demand is also prompting dealerships to maintain higher vehicle inventories. FADA data reported by Financial Express indicates passenger-vehicle inventory has reached around 43–45 days, compared with the recommended 21-day level.

For prospective buyers, the current market environment makes it important to look beyond promotional offers and advertised EMIs. Comparing the interest rate, loan tenure, total interest, processing charges and overall repayment amount can help buyers select a financing option that fits both their monthly budget and long-term financial plans.
