Education Financing Gains Attention as Students Seek Smarter Ways to Fund Higher Studies

The rising cost of higher education is encouraging students and families across India to explore structured financing options for degree and professional programmes. Education loans are increasingly being considered alongside savings, scholarships and other financial assistance as students look for ways to manage tuition and related study expenses.

Government-backed initiatives are also supporting access to education finance. Under the PM-Vidyalaxmi Scheme, eligible students admitted on merit to designated Quality Higher Education Institutions can access collateral-free and guarantor-free education loans. The scheme currently covers 1,425 eligible institutions, while qualifying students can also receive interest support based on family income.

Recent government data also highlights the growing importance of education lending. Outstanding education loans from public sector banks increased from ₹72,726 crore in March 2021 to ₹1,16,786 crore in March 2025.

With education costs continuing to influence financial decisions, experts and borrowers are placing greater emphasis on comparing interest rates, repayment periods, additional charges and eligibility requirements before selecting a loan. Students are also encouraged to estimate their total education expenses and future EMI obligations carefully.

The latest developments indicate that smart education financing and responsible borrowing could play an important role in helping students pursue career-focused higher education without putting excessive pressure on family savings.
