Machinery Financing Gains Importance as Indian MSMEs Focus on Manufacturing Growth
New Delhi, August 2026: Indian micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are increasingly focusing on technology adoption, productivity and manufacturing capacity as businesses look for ways to remain competitive. With machinery and equipment often requiring significant capital investment, financing options are becoming an important consideration for businesses planning expansion.
The Union Government has also taken steps to improve access to credit for MSMEs purchasing plant, machinery and equipment. In March 2026, the government modified the Mutual Credit Guarantee Scheme for MSMEs (MCGS-MSME), under which eligible MSMEs can receive guarantee coverage for credit facilities of up to ₹100 crore for purchasing plant and machinery or equipment. The changes were aimed at expanding coverage and reducing compliance requirements.
The development comes as manufacturing remains an important part of India's growth strategy. According to a government briefing on the Union Budget 2026-27, India's manufacturing GVA grew by 7.72% in Q1 and 9.13% in Q2 of FY 2025-26, while medium- and high-technology industries accounted for 46.3% of manufacturing value added.
For small businesses, purchasing machinery outright can place pressure on working capital needed for salaries, inventory, raw materials and supplier payments. Machinery financing can help businesses spread the equipment cost over a repayment period while retaining funds for day-to-day operations.
Businesses are also evaluating used machinery as an alternative to expensive new equipment. Used machines can have a lower purchase cost, although buyers should carefully assess their condition, maintenance history, remaining useful life and availability of spare parts before making a decision.
As India's manufacturing ecosystem continues to evolve, smart machinery investment and appropriate financing may help MSMEs improve productivity without putting unnecessary pressure on operational cash flow.
